Welcome
The Uruguayan Conference of Mayors (Congreso de Intendentes de Uruguay) wishes to welcome all the regions’ delegates, as well as the local and regional governments and international agencies that will participate in the III World Regions Summit that will be held from the 20th to the 22nd of April 2010, to discuss our response to Climate Change.
Our country feels proud to be hosting such a major international event that will gather the visions of attendees from across the globe. We share the same goal in our pursuit of solutions to the problems caused by the excessive greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the application of an unsustainable model of development. The global community is currently scrutinizing its finest details, in an attempt to design actions that may favor sustainability.
With the difficulties inherent to a small country, but with the enthusiasm and stubbornness adopted by Uruguayans when our objectives are set, we have adopted the strategic path leading to sustainable development, and have already taken our initial strides – firmly and relentlessly.
This means taking the road of low GHG emissions, as well as implementing immediate measures in the sectors of development most vulnerable to climate change: the poorest social sectors threatened by extreme climatic events and the spread of disease vectors, the production and tourist industries that suffer a significant socio economic impact, as well as the damage to goods and services provided by nature, and who are incapable of adapting to the consequences of climate change.
It will be an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences and to discuss new proposals that may enable all the world’s local governments and regions to go on developing their actions in the post Copenhagen international framework.
